Hi all-Backyard Tire Fire continues on their rise from the cornfields to the world, touring with Clutch through August. They already crossed the US, now they're crossing Canada West to East, returning to Illinois for a couple hometown shows, then recording their new album with former Wilco member/producer Jay Bennett. BTF's contract with us is up in February '08, so we won't be releasing it, I suspect they'll be releasing it themselves, founding their own label with their manager, since experience has shown us 1)A band with a great manager doesn't necessarily need a label if the band can spend the money themselves that bands normally depend on labels to spend, and 2) retail distribution and releases to stores are completely pointless, so a label using their distribution deal to attract bands is really only offering heartache, because it's not likely you'll ever get paid for your retail shipments unless you're selling thousands of cds. Any band can get their stuff online today, you don't need a physical distributor to have their hand in that too. A band at BTF's level can sell as many cds on their own website as they can in nationwide retail distribution, and ten-twenty times that amount at shows. It's over for retail cd sales.
