So it’s been awhile since I did a Backyard Tire Fire Update, since the band’s kinda been in a holding pattern since the end of the Clutch tour in May, which resulted in sold-out events across the country, with 2 cancellations due to Clutch’s singer’s throat problems, which cleared up quickly. BTF has been playing the summer festival circuit, playing Summer Camp, Wakarusa, Warren Haynes’ Mountain Jam, and a bunch of other stuff, some block parties in Chicago, which are incredibly fun and well-organized throughout the summer, and some fun local shows. The Clutch tour was so successful they added 28 shows across the US again beginning 7/27, making up the two cancellations, and then going across Canada. After that they’ll come home to make their new album with producer/former Wilco member Jay Bennett, then they’ll be on their first US headlining tour through November. They also got a really cool gig on a cruise with Lynard Skynard in January. It was nice to see huge crowds respond to BTF the way we’d hoped, and they responded in cd sales at the shows as well, which was very uplifting, since our retail has been slow like everyone else’s, though our digital for February and March after the release of the new album was very strong. (I see these numbers on a 90-day delay) Legal digital downloading continues to rise as people fear being anally raped by a big label attorney for downloading p2p. Confession time…I appreciate that the major labels are making examples of the big offenders in the p2p world. Music is not free to create in personal cost, it’s not free to produce in production costs, it’s not free to make the public aware of new music in promo expenses, artists make their living from it, so why should it be free to the public just because the technology exists to do it? Of course it shouldn’t, and the public shouldn’t expect the industry, majors or indie, to lay down and watch the work they put their heart, soul, and money into to make just be stolen because a segment of society has somehow decided the artists can afford to have it stolen. Bullshit. …Back to the story…the Big Question still exists; can we make our money back in the current environment? I can tell you I’m not as panicky about it as I was before 28 more dates were added with Clutch, taking BTF into Canada for the first time, where they really respond to alt-country from the States. The announcement of the headlining tour was a big boost as well, because if there’s one thing we’ve learned, it’s that people buy cds at shows after they watched a great show, people know it’s the most direct way to support a band they like, and it’s how we’re going to be able to keep producing new music for the people, which is what it’s all about for us. We make music, we want to reach the people with it.
