Atlanta, I have followed this gentleman since his days as a guitarist in the hair metal band, Southgang and I witnessed first hand how the city exploded on the heels of the single,"Freak of The Week" by Marvelous 3, the cock rock/glam band fronted by him. I have seen him rock the stage with the fury of 100 bands and also woo crowds of women in acoustic singer/songwriter showcases. He has quickly become the top producer du jour for the pop/rock mainstream rock crowd. He is loud, funny, obnoxious and talented as hell. He is Butch Walker and he was gracious enough to take a few minutes to answer a few questions from me while on the road with his band.

You were recently on tour with Avril Lavigne (who you produced) and you
played in arenas and amphitheatres all summer. It was an amazing show with
lots of energy. How do you balance the larger shows with a big stage and
full production with smaller shows in clubs like what you are doing here in
Nashville at the Exit/In?

Well. I just think of the saddest moment in my life.. Sorry, I just watched Team America again. I just get
up and play off the crowd. If they are lame, I try to win them. If they are great, then I suck intentionally :-)

You also have been doing a lot of acoustic shows. Do you like the intimacy
of those "stripped" shows or would you rather rock out with the band?

I don't know. I like both. There's no good or bad thing about either. They are both important to me,
depending on my mood that month. I have fans that have only seen me play intimate shows, then see
me with a band and look at me like I'm possessed. I love the footage of Dylan getting booed for having
the Band back him up and he had an electric gtr on. People were saying he sold out. God I love that!

What is your favorite gear that you bring on the road with you? (Favorite:
guitars/amps/misc etc.)

God, please, no tech talk..
Fabreeze, ipod, blackberry, temperpedic pillow, some of my favorite wines... I like simple pleasures
Josh.....

In the last couple of years you have really made a name for yourself as a
sought out producer and writer working with bands like Avril Lavigne, SR-71, Simple Plan, Sevendust
& American Hi-Fi. How did all that come about?

Well, I guess it was from people liking my work on my own band's records. Its not like I went out to kill
the production market. I like doing it, but I'm an artist I think first and foremost. But most people don't
know that, and that's okay... If I have to kiss one more goddamn radio stations ass and do their fucking
"wake up, zany, wild and wet, beaver eater crew show" thingy, then I think I would kill myself.

What are some of the projects you are working on for the future? Both Butch
Walker projects and projects with other artists.

I am doing tons of stuff for others, but I'm getting ready to spend all winter recording 2 albums for my
own things. Its gonna be great. Everything you hate, all on two records!

I've noticed that you have quite a presence on MYSPACE. It seems like you
are everyone's "friend". How do you feel about the phenomenon of MYSPACE as it applies to
musicians?

It helps a lot. So many people have bought my record because of a stupid clip of a song and a picture
on a website that started as a "hookup" zone. Those are records sold by a fuckin website.... Not a
record company!!!! Gotta love Tom.

I don't know if you know it, but I have heard that there is a Butch Walker /
Marvelous 3 tribute album in the works. In fact, a local Nashville band, FORMER, has a track on it, a
rockin' version of "Mixtape". How does it make you feel to know that you are in a place where people
are lining up to pay tribute to your career?

I don't know. I would pick someone much more accomplished ya know? I'm kinda the guy who made it
to third base with the girl, then lied to everyone and said he made it all the way. I'm much bigger in my
own head than I really am.

I always ask this of the artists I interview because most of our readership
are musicians. As someone who has musically "been there" and "done that", what kind of advice could
you give to a someone who is out there trying to make a name for themselves as a musician in a band?

Don't piss people off.

Check out Butch Walker and his band live in action November 16th at The Exit In with Damon opening.
