Deadsun CD release party, 12th and Porter, June 10th 2006-
Ok, I waited for my limo that night until about 9:30 and decided to head on out in the wife’s mini van. I get lots of suggestions as to which gigs I should attend and review. Well, the name Deadsun had been suggested more than once to me and I had seen ‘em years ago at an all day event down at the Muse.
I have known Rex Arther for a pretty long while, since his days in Intruder. I don’t know him really well, more like I have stood next to him drinkin’ beer at the Gold Rush checkin’ out the bar honeys. Ok, so, I should add now that the style of music that Deadsun plays is not in my genre of expertise. I can tell, however, when it’s played badly and Deadsun does not play badly. They are tight as can be and the music is well thought out. The vocals are audible and that is a big plus for me when attending slash and burn audio assault style shows.
First of all the place was packed. The crowd was enthusiastic about the show and the sound was well mixed. The show was great, to be honest. The band has honed themselves much sharper since the first time I heard them that hot sweaty hellhole of a show a few years ago. Well the show was put on to celebrate the release of their latest album Falling Away. If you enjoyed the 2004 release, Degenerate Matter, then this one will not disappoint you. The thing is well recorded and pretty much spotless in the recording end. Great lead solos and vocals you can definitely understand.
Dee is a rip it up bass player and the drums are rock steady. The main thing that the band has goin’ for them is sincerity and I think that really comes through in their over all sound. So, since I can’t just compare them to Metallica, I will say that they have a similar flavor to many bands I hear on 102.9 The Buzz’s regular programming. I would say that is a good thing and makes ‘em marketable so you never know how far it could go for Deadsun.
So, what I would suggest to anyone interested in Deadsun is to check out their albums and then see a live show. From what I heard they do a damn fine job of carrying their recorded stuff over into the live show and it’s well worth a listen.
You can listen to some of the music at http://www.myspace.com/deadsun Find out more about the band on their website at http://www.deadsunband.com check their show schedule and have a great time at one of their live performances.
I am also certain a more comprehensive review of the new Deadsun release will be coming soon from one of our more well versed writers.
