Exit/In
Contributing writer, Nathan Bentley sent me his review of the recent Flyleaf gig at the Exit/In. Special thanks goes out to Chris Cobb & Great Big Shows for their continuing support. Now, take it away N8!
O.k…. Flyleaf. If you don’t know this band by current radio singe o the Buzz, “I’m So Sick”, you need to get to know them. This band has been mistakenly brushed off as another Evanescence rip-off. Not so. Sure, this band is also fronted by a five foot nothing female vocalist, one Lacey Mosley. But, where Lacey stands out from the rest of the pop divas tryin’ to push themselves off as a rocker (I’m talking to you Ashley Simpson and Avril Lavigne) is that this chick is not afraid to scream.
The band played almost every song from their latest self-titled cd. “I’m So Sick” along with “Breath Today” were some of the crowd’s favorites at the Exit/In. Lacey introduced the song “Cassie” about a girl who, at gunpoint, was asked if she believes in God. There’s no misguided illusion as to where this bands faith and beliefs stand. The bassist, Pat Seals, was by far the primal energy of the group. Everything that could possibly be jumped off of on the Exit In stage was jumped from and then some. Not to say that the other members of the group, Jared Hartmann (guitar), Sameer Bhattacharya (guitar), and James Culpepper (drums) didn’t hold it down as well.
I went into this show, not expecting to see much of a pit due to the size of Exit/In and also because a lot of Flyleaf’s songs aren’t on the heavier side. But, sure enough, a small, yet undeniable pit formed. Even two of my female friends (what the heck, I’ll boost myself up… my girlfriends) jumped in the pit too. But the nights mosh pit championship belongs to two huge titans that pitted with just themselves for almost a whole song by themselves.
As of now, Flyleaf only has an EP and a full length CD. With that comes limited material to play out on tour. The show was great overall, although, the shortness of it was a little disappointing. When the fans refused to leave at the end of the show, Lacey came back on stage with one of her guitarists and performed another song. Leaving a show, wanting more from a band with just one full-length release is a good thing.
The opening band for Flyleaf was an East Tennessee band called Showdown. Next time I catch these guys in town… rest assured I’m devoting my full attention to a review of their set.
