Getting to Know Your Local D.J. with:

Everyone knows about the new format over at 102.9 The Buzz ROCKS. This format shift was a welcome change amongst our readers/musicians. Since the change, we (along with our bands) have received overwhelming support from 102.9. We, here at NashvilleRock.net, truly appreciate the work that the crew at The Buzz is doing. On that note, I recently discussed all sorts of things, music related & not, with morning d.j., Dagwood. He is the guy that you listen to as you down your coffee in a mad dash to the office while listening to the Bob and Tom show. He is also involved in the wonderfu world of adult entertainment. So, sit back, relax, and get to know Dagwood!:

1. You have the most seniority of all of the Buzz deejays. What led you to getting the job and do you have a swelled head about being there the longest?

I’ve been with the company for over 10 years. I was there during the horrid country days, Power Country...Moo 102...Rockin’ Country. Then when we flipped to The Buzz, I was fortunate enough for them to ask me to stay. I did weekends for a little while and then the B/T gig opened up and I went for it. Been doing that now for 6 years. One thing I’ve learned in radio is never get the big head...it could all be over tomorrow. One cool thing about The Buzz I’d like to share is how well everyone gets along. McFly rocks balls at night. Bob and Tom is, without a doubt, the best morning show in Nashville. Russell is great in middays. Zigz has the best afternoon show in Nashville. And we hit a homerun deciding to put Doogie on at nights...he was being wasted doing traffic. And all the weekend staff (Aljon, Traci, and Bill Dawkins) is very good too! There aren’t many radio stations in the country where an airstaff hangs out as much as we all do outside of work. Very cool work environment and I’m glad to be part of it.

2. Being the deejay that runs the Bob & Tom show must be a lot of fun. Has there ever been a time that the show had you in such hysterical laughter that you couldn’t compose yourself when going to the commercial break? Any interesting bloopers that have occurred doing the Bob & Tom show?

I love it! I’m perfect to do that show. I have never been offended by anything in my life. I laugh harder at a fart now than when I was six. There have been a few times I was laughing so hard, I almost just blew the break off. It usually happens when Doug Stanhope or Emo Phillips are on. No big bloopers or anything...I do remember one morning where Stephen Lynch was so out of control, I thought "this is it, if they don’t get him out of the studio, we’re all in trouble". Oh, and Chick said "suck my cock" one morning and they missed the beep. That’ll wake ya up! My most embarrassing moment was when the computer died right before a break and I had to fill 6 minutes by myself! Which normally wouldn’t have been a problem if I had been prepared...but guess what? I wasn’t. Gotta love live radio.

3. You also host ‘Wild Wednesday’ over at Club Platinum. What are the three best and worst things about doing this job?

Best

1) Getting paid, bitch!

2) Having an excuse to get out of the house and drink beer during the week

3) No comment

Worst:

1) Having to get up at 4 the morning after

2) Missing the last 30 minutes of "Lost" every Wednesday

3) I can’t think of anything else

4. What do you think of the recent format shift to edgier music on The Buzz? Do you think that this shift will be permanent or will they eventually give in to the Top-40 emo movement after trying this?

I love the new format! I’d been hoping they would do this for a while now. I have not heard one negative comment about it, so I’m guessing it’s here to stay. Didn’t we just switch from that top-40 emo shit? Speaking of edgier music...if you don’t know... We have a new show on Sundays mornings that replaced The Retro Buzz...it’s called The Buzz Rocks Rewind. Bill Dawkins hosts it. You can hear anything from Type O Negative to Bryan Adams to Slash’s Snakepit. I do a segment on there too. I’ll bust out Corrosion of Conformity, Dokken, Stuck Mojo...Anthrax...anything I can find here at the house I haven’t listened to in a while. One morning I’m gonna fuck around and bring some Lizzy Borden in...watch me!

COMPARING MEASUREMENTS WITH RON JEREMY. RON WAS QUOTED AS SAYING, "LIZZY BORDEN? DIDN'T I DO HER IN CAUGHT FROM BEHIND 5?"

5. Where did the ‘Dagwood’ name come from? Are you a big fan of the Blondie comic strip or the sandwich?

Mmmmm. Sandwiches! Of course I’m a fan of Blondie...have you seen the tits on that broad?! She makes me wanna put my own lump of Silly Putty on the funny pages. I’ve just been called Dagwood for years. An old music director at the station (when we were country) started calling me that because she couldn’t ever remember my name...and it stuck. The only people who call me by my real name are my parents.

6. What is your opinion of the local rock scene and what can be done to improve it?

First off, I want to apologize to you local guys. I get bulletins on myspace, e-mails and things like that promoting your shows all the time. Not that I think you guys are sitting at the door waiting for me, but I get up too damn early to be hanging out until 1 am to see a band. So I’m not being a dick and not supporting you guys...I just can’t do it. I respect the scene because you guys are kicking ass in a country music town. One thing I really dug that I’d like to see you guys do again was The Music City Mayhem shows. I think that’s what they were called. I went to the first one at the Exit/In and I loved every band there.

NOTE FROM NASHVILLEROCK.NET: "WE ARE CONTINUING THE TRADITION. MONSTERS OF MOSH AT THE END ON JANUARY 7TH AT THE END (HEY, IT'S MY COLUMN I CAN DO WHATEVER I WANT!)

7. The Last of Dagwood:

Movie you watched. Saw 2

CD you listened to. Stephen Lynch- The Craig Machine

Show you attended: I’m guessing the last Dancin in the District. The last GOOD show I attended was EYEHATEGOD at The End.

Time you had to cover for Zigz being late? I’m assuming you mean Russell. If I ever have to cover for Zigz, then Russell is really fuckin’ late. Russ is usually good about being there. A better question would be how often McFly has to cover for ME.

Porn film you watched. Britney Rears...I still don’t know how she got that thing in her ass.

Drunk geezer that tried to get you to hook him up' at Club Platinum. Unfortunately, my boss.

8. What’s your favorite Bob & Tom jingle or skit?

I like "The Pussycat Song" from The Asylum Street Spankers. Of course, thanks to Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake, you’ll NEVER hear that again. It’s funny, that whole fiasco happened on TV. Yet, radio was the medium that paid the price for it. TV has actually gotten worse since then, while we’re still sitting around with muzzles on wondering what we can and can’t say anymore. Anyway, I also will never get tired of the Godzilla phone calls and "Morgan Freeman" calls...cause sodomy is funny.

9. Rate-a-Band: Rate the following bands on a scale of 1-10. 10 being songsmiths of mythical

proportions and 1 being the musical equivalent to The Pet Rock.

Since I’m not a musician, I won’t rate them on talent. I’ll just rate on how much I like them

Metallica: From "Kill ‘Em All" to Enter Sandman on "The Black Album". 10...from Sad but True on "The Black Album" 'til present. 2

The Spice Girls: 1, just cause I’d do a couple of them and you gotta admit... that hit of theirs was pretty catchy

Pantera: 11. I’m a huge fan of Anselmo’s...I love Superjoint Ritual and Down also.

Gerardo (y’know, the Rico Suave guy): 1/2...but at least he thought he was cool, which I guess counts for something.

Motley Crue 10... I grew up on this shit, Piece of Your Action is still one of my all time favorite songs

Aqualung- wasn’t that a Jethro Tull song? If this is an artist or a band, I’m sorry...never heard of them. I hope they finally blew their nose though.

Coldplay- Negative one million...only girls and homos like this band.

Alice Cooper- music-4 stage show-10... saw him when I was in high school at The Municipal Auditorium...My stepfather was always a big fan and he took me to see him. Vinnie Vincent Invasion opened up...great show!

10. If you could change one thing about Nashville (music-related or otherwise), what would it be and why?

The shit-kicker country image. This is my hometown (actually LaVergne, but close enough) and I’ve never even owned a pair of cowboy boots (even though girls do look hot in them). One thing that has always pissed me off, is when you’re watching Monday Night Football from Nashville and they go to a commercial and show some dick with a cowboy hat walking into Tootsies...or some tourists line dancing at The Wildhorse. Come on! Show some hot ass girls dancing on the bar at Bar Nashville...or Spout, RTS, Ligion, Gear Driven, somebody blowing the roof off of the fucking Exit/In. It always has killed me.

Wow! It's nice to hear from Dagwood. It's refreshing to hear that one of our own is not afraid to speak his mind. That's what makes 102.9 The Buzz Rock!!

That'll do it for this time. Stay tuned for another wacky interview with 1029.9 d.j., McFly!

Until Next Time: I'm out like Nick & Jessica
