About timkappel
Nashville local by way of Louisiana, Tim Kappel’s musical horizon suffers no parameters. His earthy hues of folk introspection, vintage rock and potent pop gracefully unfurl across an infinite sonic canvas. Kappel’s even tenor croons intimate admissions that are as inviting as his resonant melodies, but it’s his earnest swagger that earns comparisons to Dave Matthews and John Mayer. And though the parallels are welcome, multi-instrumentalist Kappel is determined to paint his own acoustic masterpiece. Since the initial exploration of his musical talents at the age of 10, Kappel has crossed international borders with a European tour that included live performances in Paris and London, among other cities. Domestically, he and his former band Groove Cartel opened a concert for rap-metal rocker Kid Rock, as well as performing at the annual New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, a particular highlight for Kappel. “Everybody in New Orleans grew up going to Jazzfest and it’s such an honor to play,” Kappel says. “I still have my 1998 Jazzfest poster with Dr. John on the cover and it goes with me everywhere.” Kappel’s statement is a culmination of 13 years of an ever-evolving musical journey. Born and raised in New Orleans, Kappel was immersed in a culturally rich musical environment within and surrounding his household. “Music was definitely a part of my childhood,” Kappel says. “I can remember my dad playing Beatles songs to me on the guitar and my brother was also a guitarist. Music was, and still is, the soul bridge between us.” At the age of 10, Kappel began playing the drums, but later extended his talents to bass guitar. After joining his high school jazz band, however, an opportunity to learn the acoustic guitar prompted itself. “It was great because I didn’t have anything holding me back,” Kappel says. “I didn’t have any preconceived notions as to how the guitar was played. I began at the broadest level and in jazz, anything goes. That’s how it was with my guitar playing --anything goes.” In 2000, Kappel took his talents to Murfreesboro, in pursuit of a college degree from Middle Tennessee State University in Recording Industry Management. He embarked on the mission not only with hope of expanding his educational sphere, but with aspirations of rock prominence. Throughout his collegiate career, Kappel vehemently sought musical improvement, both as a producer and songwriter. The release of This Time Next Year is a testament to his unwavering nature and persistent dedication to his talents. “The only way I will be able to accept failure is if I go out there and give it 110%,” Kappel says. “If I give it my all and I use the same determination and perseverance as I’ve used in other aspects of my life, I don’t think there’s much that can stop me. Music is so many things to me, that regardless of what I do in my life, it will always be an outlet. My hope is that my music can be an outlet for others because I know the power in that” -Jessica Robertson
