Hmm 1168 views before me, and not one review. WTF? But I digress. It give me the opportunity to give the guys of Piranah their first review.
I guess I should start off by saying that I don't live in Nashville, I live in Columbia. Second I guess I should also say I would consider my Piranah Asylum myspace page (http://www.myspace.com/piranahteamcolumbiatn) to be more than just a street team page.
And I wish I could say that I have been a fan from the beginning, but I was just introduced to Piranah a bit over a year ago. Another band I had seen back in the early 90's, Vahalla, had re-formed and had played a few shows. Soon after Vahalla got some bands together for Headbanger's Ball (Nashville edition). Piranah was the opening band.
I had checked out their myspace page and listened to their music, but nothing can even compare to seeing these guys live. Needless to say I was blown away, and became an instant fan. Their live show is not just full of energy, it's high energy. A true metal band, killer guitar sound, powerful bass, thunderous drums, and a lead singer that don't just sing or scream lyrics, he becomes the lyrics like a grenade waiting to explode. Darren the singer is what really stole the show for me. I had exchange a few myspace messages with him prior to the show, but after the show I would say I got more than I would expect. After removing their equipment from the building, Darren and Matt came back into the club to hang out with the crowd, watch the next band (Disarray), and to sell cd's at the back of the club (Exit/In). Darren was super cool and we chatted some about myspace, the show, and normal stuff. Of course I bought both of the Piranah cd's they had available.
Couple of week's later or so I find out through their myspace page that their bass player and drummer are leaving the band. I'm crushed. But Darren and Matt arent just gonna throw away Piranah and go away. Sometimes good things come to those who wait. By the end of 2006, Piranah have a new drummer (Chris) and a new bass player (Thorin) and are writing songs together for a new album. From the initial tunes it's a re-energized Piranah. Mostly a bit heavier. As the recording goes, they add some new tunes to their myspace. Finally the recording is done, off to be mastered etc., and they post a few gigs on their myspace. The first two are a bit far away for me to get to (Cadiz KY and Knoxville), but the third and fourth are close enough.
First show in Nashville at the End 7/7/07. After a later than expected opening, the show got started a bit after10pm, with Piranah going on sometime just before midnight. It was an awesome set, but something else kinda cool happening too. The bands were all there the whole time, watching the other bands and enjoying the show. Usually an band comes, plays, then leaves, sometimes leaving behind a member to sell goodies. Not at this show. Which to me was way cool. Small club though, and not a very huge turnout. Awesome show though.
Second Show in Nashville at the Exit/In. Bigger club, bigger stage, HUGE sound. AWESOME show. Awesome sound. Piranah tore the house down. Better crowd this week too, even got a small mosh pit going for a little bit. The first 50 people in the club got a promo cd from Piranah of 3 of the new songs off the upcoming cd release entitled Orchestrated Noise. Not as much intermingling of the bands this time, although most all of them stuck around at least long enough to watch Piranah.
Looking forward to their next show in Tennessee. Maybe they will play a few more of the older Piranah songs.
